    Early-emerging cognitive vulnerability to depression and the serotonin transporter promoter region polymorphism.E. P. Hayden, L. R. Dougherty, B. Maloney, T. M. Olino, H. Sheikh, C. E. Durbin, J. I. Nurnberger Jr, D. K. Lahiri & D. N. Klein - 2008 - J Affect Disord 107:227-30.
BACKGROUND: Serotonin transporter promoter genotype appears to increase risk for depression in the context of stressful life events. However, the effects of this genotype on measures of stress sensitivity are poorly understood. Therefore, this study examined whether 5-HTTLPR genotype was associated with negative information processing biases in early childhood. METHOD: Thirty-nine unselected seven-year-old children completed a negative mood induction procedure and a Self-Referent Encoding Task designed to measure positive and negative schematic processing. Children were also genotyped for the 5-HTTLPR gene. (...)

    Beyond Matter and Mind. [REVIEW]T. L. R. - 1960 - Review of Metaphysics 14 (2):361-361.
The author attacks recent as well as traditional philosophic speculation and attempts to formulate his own resolution to all the outstanding problems in philosophy. But the elaboration of his "psycho-physiological monism" results in involving the author in most of the difficulties he claimed to avoid.--R. T. L.

    Foundations of Empiricism. [REVIEW]T. L. R. - 1963 - Review of Metaphysics 16 (3):581-581.
The author claims to be aiming at the conception of a "finite metaphysics," which is described as a metaphysics which draws heavily upon researches in symbolic logic and the empirical sciences. The result is uneven, and at times wearisome. Though several sections are interesting and valuable in their own right, in this "open system of finite ontology" one finds more openness than system.--R. T. L.

    The Lure for Feeling. [REVIEW]T. L. R. - 1960 - Review of Metaphysics 14 (2):364-364.
In this refreshingly different study of Whitehead's thought, Miss Wyman attempts to elicit the aesthetic relevance of Whitehead's categories by means of comparisons and contrasts with such men as Goethe, Emerson, Whitman, and particularly, Wordsworth. Although not a technically rigorous discussion, Miss Wyman's book is useful and instructive.--R. T. L.

    The Lure of Wisdom. [REVIEW]T. L. R. - 1963 - Review of Metaphysics 16 (3):580-580.
In this Aquinas lecture the author defends the idea of wisdom as a valid and valuable topic for philosophic discussion. Collins devotes most of his energies to explaining the largely neglected Cartesian view of wisdom. He concludes that by the method of "metaphysical ingression" we can give the subject of wisdom its proper close connection with the whole of metaphysics.--R. T. L.

    Temperamental fearfulness in childhood and the serotonin transporter promoter region polymorphism: a multimethod association study.E. P. Hayden, L. R. Dougherty, B. Maloney, C. Emily Durbin, T. M. Olino, J. I. Nurnberger Jr, D. K. Lahiri & D. N. Klein - 2007 - Psychiatr Genet 17:135-42.
OBJECTIVES: Early-emerging, temperamental differences in fear-related traits may be a heritable vulnerability factor for anxiety disorders. Previous research indicates that the serotonin transporter promoter region polymorphism is a candidate gene for such traits. METHODS: Associations between 5-HTTLPR genotype and indices of fearful child temperament, derived from maternal report and standardized laboratory observations, were examined in a community sample of 95 preschool-aged children. RESULTS: Children with one or more long alleles of the 5-HTTLPR gene were rated as significantly more nervous during (...)

    Critical social theory approach to disclosure of genomic incidental findings.J. L. Bevan, J. N. Senn-Reeves, B. R. Inventor, S. M. Greiner, K. M. Mayer, M. T. Rivard & R. J. Hamilton - 2012 - Nursing Ethics 19 (6):819-828.
Technology has expanded genomic research and the complexity of extracted gene-related information. Health-related genomic incidental findings pose new dilemmas for nurse researchers regarding the ethical application of disclosure to participants. Consequently, informed consent specific to incidental findings is recommended. Critical Social Theory is used as a guide in recognition of the changing meaning of informed consent and to serve as a framework to inform nursing of the ethical application of disclosure consent in genomic nursing research practices.

Volume delivered during recruitment maneuver predicts lung stress in acute respiratory distress syndrome. Beitler Jr, R. Majumdar, R. D. Hubmayr, A. Malhotra, B. T. Thompson, R. L. Owens, S. H. Loring & D. Talmor - unknown
Copyright © 2015 by the Society of Criti. Objective: Global lung stress varies considerably with low tidal volume ventilation for acute respiratory distress syndrome. High stress despite low tidal volumes may worsen lung injury and increase risk of death. No widely available parameter exists to assess global lung stress. We aimed to determine whether the volume delivered during a recruitment maneuver is inversely associated with lung stress and mortality in acute respiratory distress syndrome. Design: Substudy of an acute respiratory distress (...)

    Studies in Process Philosophy II. [REVIEW]T. L. E. - 1977 - Review of Metaphysics 31 (1):130-130.
Process philosophy is said by some to be the future of American philosophy. This collection of essays, ranging from studies of Whitehead to Camus and Sir Muhammad Iqbal, extends the discussion far beyond the boundaries of North America. Several of the essays are of a more systematic character. Donald Hanks analyzes the category of process as a pre-conceptual principle used to organize experience into an intelligible pattern. Andrew Reck provides an analysis of the meaning and justification of what he considers (...)

    The Existential Experience. [REVIEW]T. L. E. - 1973 - Review of Metaphysics 26 (4):757-757.
Harper appeals to philosophy, literature, psychiatry and theology from Augustine to R. D. Laing to present what he calls a coherent picture of the major existential themes found in interior experience. This is not a book in existential philosophy in the usual sense. Indeed Harper argues that academic philosophers have failed to adequately treat interior experience. Interior experience, he says, is largely emotional and does not yield easily to analysis and conceptualization. Harper’s style is exploratory and suggestive, even lyrical at (...)

Earl R. MacCormick provides his readers with a survey of recent studies in the languages of science and religion arguing that both science and religion employ metaphors and that the one is as vulnerable as the other to attacks of meaninglessness on the grounds of verifiability and falsifiability criteria of meaning. While acknowledging that the contents and intentions of metaphors in science and religion differ, MacCormick argues that science and religion use metaphors for similar purposes and that both create myths (...)
